William W. Johnson died Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Hospice Atlanta, He was 86.
Mr. Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, son of William W. Johnson, Sr. and Marjorie P. Johnson. He attended Rollins College and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts from the University of Georgia; Mr. Johnson continued to study piano and organ performance in Paris, France and New York City in addition to graduate work at Florida State University.
He served as a Professor of Music at Georgia State University from 1948 until he retired in 1984. During his career, he also served as an organist and choir director for several Atlanta area churches. Aside from his love of music, Mr. Johnson and his wife enjoyed world travel.. He attended Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Sandy Springs.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Yvonne S. Johnson of Sandy Springs, his son, Stephen M. Johnson and daughter-in-law Helen G. Johnson of Sandy Springs, daughter Yvonne J, Hinton and son-in-law George K. Hinton of Dahlonega, granddaughter Catherine W. Johnson of Atlanta, and his brother Bishop ret Robert H. Johnson of Asheville, North Carolina.
A private family Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contribution to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr., Atlanta, GA 30319.
