William Buckner Mitchell
MITCHELL, William Buckner Mitchell Jr, age 90, of Atlanta, Georgia died peacefully on June 28th. He was born December 19, 1925 in Montgomery, Alabama to William B. Mitchell, Sr. and Evelyn E. Mitchell. The Mitchell’s relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina when Bill was a child and he graduated in 1944 from Central High School. He was called into service in 1944 for World War II and served in the U.S. Army through 1945. Bill was proud of his service in the 14th Tank Battalion, 9th Armored Division and especially for his Battalion’s actions during the battle for the Bridge at Remagen Germany. After the War’s end, he entered Clemson University, graduated in 1949, and soon thereafter moved to Atlanta, Georgia working for the Royal Typewriter Company. Bill remained in the printing industry until his retirement in the early 1980’s.
Bill was a wonderful husband and beloved father to his family. He and Carolyn Johnston of Thomaston, GA married in 1958 at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church where they became active members for over 60 years. During that time Bill was a member of the Timothy Sunday School Class as well as the head usher for the Church for 15 years. His widespread community involvement included the Kiwanis Club and Downtown Rotary. Bill is remembered as having never met a stranger and he could regale anyone at any time with stories and conversation. Countless home and community projects for family and friends bear the mark of Bill’s willing hand.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years Carolyn Johnston Mitchell. The surviving family include Marilyn Mitchell Friddle and her husband Terry of Charlotte, North Carolina and Emily Mitchell Goldman and her husband Bill, of Atlanta, Georgia. The grandchildren are Hayes Friddle, Jack Friddle, Carter Friddle, Mamie Goldman and Charlie Goldman.
â¨A memorial service will be held Tuesday July 5, 2016 at 2PM at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Bill may make memorials in his memory to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30305, or to a charity of choice.
