Victor I. Dekle

Victor I Dekle
The nation has lost yet another member of the greatest generation. Victor I Dekle, 88 of Cedartown Georgia, passed away January 4, 2012 following a long illness. Born in Chicago IL August 4, 1923 the family soon moved to Moultrie Georgia. After graduating from Moultrie High School in 1942, Vic joined the Army Air Corps for three years, half of which was served in England, Normandy France and Germany. As did thousands of other young men and women who served this country in World War II, Vic returned to a normal everyday life. Joining several hometown friends going to Auburn, he earned a degree in textile engineering, married and began working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Cedartown GA in 1948. His years with Goodyear took him to other mills as well as time at home office in Akron OH before eventually returning to Cedartown where he was Superintendent when the mill closed in 1986. Vic then worked in Cartersville as a fabric development engineer until his retirement in 1989.
Vic was the quintessential American family man. He was hard working, loved God, his family and this country. He enjoyed woodworking, stained glass, gardening, square dancing but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially at Pensacola Beach. His many civic affiliations over the years included Jaycees and Kiwanis. A member of the Cedartown Exchange Club for 36 years, Vic served as President, Chair of the Polk County Fair Commission, coordinator of the Freedom Shrines for schools and was instrumental in the establishment of the Child Abuse Program in Polk County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Vic is survived by Joyce McNeil Dekle, his devoted wife of 64 years, two daughters Donna Raines, husband Scott, of Ringgold, Jan Owens, husband JM, of Kennesaw, son Ken, wife Kerry, of Powder Springs, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents T.I. and Mary Eudell Dekle of Moultrie, brothers Harold Dekle of Augusta GA and Gene Dekle of Atlanta.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2pm on Saturday January 14th at the First Baptist Church in Cedartown followed by a memorial service at 2:00. Graveside services will be Friday January 20th at 2pm at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton Georgia with full military honors. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 101 College Street Cedartown GA 30125 or to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home.
