A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and wife to Fred of 64 years, Velma Mohr died January 23, 2024. Velma was born on March 11, 1934, in Whitehall, Louisiana to Henry and Azalea Dupuy Crane. She graduated valedictorian from Maurepas High School in 1951 and attended Elliott Business College. She took her first job with Esso (Standard Oil, later Exxon Mobil) and while living in Ponchatoula, agreed to a blind date with Fred. They were married in 1958 and moved to Atlanta in 1963 with their young sons Gregory and Michael. The family lived in Atlanta for 20 years where they welcomed four more children. Even as she raised their six children, Velma managed to find time to dabble in real estate, volunteer at their parish church, and lead the PTA at her children’s elementary and high schools. Fred’s career took them to Cleveland, OH in 1983 where they spent 12 years and Vel again stayed busy volunteering with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, NASA’s Glenn Research Center and visiting and praying with residents at local nursing homes. When Fred retired in 1995, they returned to the Atlanta area and built their retirement home on Lake Oconee in Greensboro, GA where they lived and entertained family and friends for 24 years.
Vel is survived by her daughter-in-law Susan (wife of her late son, Gregory) and their children Catherine Bocanegra (Tito), Caroline Roberts (Elliot) and Christina; son Michael and his wife Sheila and their children Meredith Comerford (Joey), Joseph (Callie), Daniel and Natalie; daughter Lisa Bir and her husband, Steve and their children, Andrew (Amber), Matthew, James and Paul; son Christopher and his wife Mindi and their children Marin, Steven, Valencia, Kerby, Megan and Laurencia; son Philip and his wife Tracy and their children Maggie, Maribeth and Katie; daughter Anne Bizga and her husband Terry and Anne’s children Jackson, Allison and Lucas; four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, her parents, her eldest son Gregory, her grandson Sam, her sisters Mildred Longo and Marjie Berthelot and brother Henry Crane.
Funeral mass will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, March 8, 2024 at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody, GA followed by a private interment service at Honey Creek Woodlands at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA.
