Mr. Wiley was born in Wilmington, N.C. on June 21, 1923. He attended North Carolina State College prior to WWII, served in the U.S. Air Force, and graduated from Perdue University after his discharge from the Air Force.
He Joined Eastern Airlines in 1948 and worked in several sales positions in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, New York City, Hartford and Philadelphia. In 1960 he became General Sales Manager of Southern Airways and was Vice President of Marketing at the time of the merger between Southern and North Central Airlines to form Republic Airlines.
During his Career with Southern, he served as Southern’s Member Representative to the Air Traffic Conference of the Air Transport Association and was elected Vice President and then President of the Conference. He was also Director of the Airline Traffic Publishing Company. While with Southern, he was a member of the SKAL Club, Sales and Marketing Executives and the Lions Club. He and his wife, Annette are members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church.
Southern Airways sponsored the Pro AM Golf Tournament of the Southern Open, a PGA Tour event held at the Green Island Golf Club in Columbus, GA. Mr. Wiley served as the coordinator of the tournament for Southern.
He was a member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club, a member of the Governing Board, Chairman of the Golf Committee, Chairman of the Handicap Committee and member of the Green Committee for several years. Obviously he was a devoted Golfer.
Following the merger to form Republic Airlines, Mr. Wiley chose not to move to Minneapolis-St. Paul, but rather to remain in Atlanta to be close to his five children and their families. Lockheed Georgia hired him as Transport Advisor and he became Manager-Commercial Sales and was responsible for the domestic marketing of the commercial version of the Lockheed Hercules C-130, the L-100. He retired from Lockheed in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Annette Denton Wiley of Dallas, GA and his five children; Jeffrey Arlen Wiley Susan, of Atlanta, Page Wiley Hughes David, of Thomason, Lisa Wiley Ledbetter Greg, of Carrollton, Allyson Wiley Steen John, of Kennesaw and Scott Denton Wiley Patrice of Alpharetta. All of his children are married, and together, there are fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren all of whom Mr. Wiley loved and cherished
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday March 22, 2012 at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in the Kellet Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donation can be made to St. Judes Children’s Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place
