Samuel Mettrey Betor of Atlanta, GA, died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 after a courageous struggle with cancer. He was born in Ballston Spa, NY on July 23, 1941, to the late Mettrey Betor and Nellie Abraham Betor.
Sam graduated from University at Buffalo SUNY in 1964, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. In 1969 he began his career in trust and estate planning at Marine Midland Bank in Buffalo, NY. He later moved to senior positions at several banks in Florida and Georgia, finishing his career with SunTrust Bank in Atlanta as a Senior Vice-President for Personal Trust. Sam was active in the Estate Planning Councils in Florida and Georgia and also served as President of Corporate Fiduciaries. Sam received many commendations, including top sales awards every year from 1997 through 2003 and the top system wide salesperson the final three years. Since retiring in early 2004, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Marilee, playing poker with his close friends and was active in NAMC and the Atlanta Bridge Club.
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marilee Frazer Betor, daughters Michelle Stietenroth and husband Mike and Karen Ordway and husband Joe, both from Atlanta, GA, and son Tom Betor and wife Catherine of Shelby, NC. He is also survived by grandchildren Nicole and Samantha Betor and Alexander and Ryan Ordway and devoted dog Amy. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ronald Abraham Betor.
The family will be holding a memorial service at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, on Friday July 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM with a light reception to follow. A celebration of Sam’s life will be held after the service at the family’s home in Atlanta. His ashes will be reposed in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Longleaf Hospice at 2712 Lawrenceville Hwy, Suite 2000, Decatur GA 30033 or St Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, 3110 Ashford-Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta GA 30319.
