Robert Claggett Jones
Mr. Robert Claggett Jones, 83, died Saturday, August 20, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Jones, born September 13, 1927 in Lynchburg, VA, was the son of the late T. Claggett Jones and Florence Brown Jones.
Mr. Jones was a 1948 graduate of Hampden Sydney College, where he was member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the Philippines at the end of WWII as a member of the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He began his career in the textile industry as an Industrial Engineer at Dan River Mills in Danville, VA, where he worked from 1949 to 1959, and following 30 years of employment with Milliken and Co. in Abbeville, SC, Spartanburg, SC and LaGrange, GA, Mr. Jones retired in 1989. Mr. and Mrs. Jones moved to Roswell, GA in 2010 to be nearer their children.
Mr. Jones was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange, serving as a Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the Men’s Bible Class, a long-time worker for Meals On Wheels and served on various other church committees. Mr. Jones will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband and father, whose foremost ambition was the provision and security of his family.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 54 years, Deane Richardson Jones of Charlotte, NC; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Claggett Jones II and Farley Daniel Jones of Winterville, GA; his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Deane Jones Brans and Gordon Laird Brans, of Marietta, GA; three grandchildren, Abigail Deane Brans, Robert Dalton Brans, and Natalie Marie Brans; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Florence Jones Godwin.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. William Conine officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave/Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136, or to the charity of your choice.
