Major Paul L. Morris, 88, died January 6, 2010, at his home in Villa Rica, GA.Born 1921 – A native of Lenwood, PA. Graduate of Chester, PA High School 1939. Entered the military through Aviation Cadet Training and served in the European Theater of Operations during WWII. He completed 31 Combat Missions as a B-17 Navigator. He also served overseas in Japan, Labrador and Korea as a pilot flying A-26’s. He holds the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. Major Morris retired after 20 years active federal service. He served in the Los Angeles air Defense Sector stationed at Norton Air Force Base in California. He was presented the Air Force Commendation Medal by Colonel Frederick J. Nelander at the retirement ceremony.
A Senior Director in the LAADS direction center he was cited for meritorious service from 1960-1963. The citation accompanying the award commended Major Morris for displaying outstanding qualities of leadership, initiative, and motivation in molding inexperienced personnel on his crew into a highly effective fighting team. His job knowledge and decisiveness was praised in an Air Defense Command Operational Readiness Inspection.
After his retirement from the Air Force he joined the Under Writers Insurance Adjusting Company and served as a Property Insurance Adjustor. He retired after 22 years with the company. He worked part time for Reynolds Recycling before fully retiring in 1990 and relocated to Fairfield Plantation in Villa Rica, GA from Riverside, CA.
He was a member of the Fairfield Kiwanis, received the George F. Hixon Fellowship Honor Award for service in 1999. Was recognized in 2009 and was presented a framed certificate of Outstanding Dedication and Service in the community and to the Fairfield Kiwanis. He was a lifetime member in the Retired Officers Association in Riverside, CA and a member of the Military Officers Association in Carrollton, GA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and James Morris of Cape May, NJ, brothers Nelson, Robert, James and sister Elizabeth.
He is survived by his wife Nora Morris of Villa Rica, GA; two sons, Paul Morris, Jr. Ruth of Portland, OR and Richard Morris Deb of San Diego, CA; one daughter, Susan Carte Ballard of Osprey, FL; four step daughters, Donna Fraker Don, Tami Houchens Glenn, Tina Stevenson K. Michael, all of Riverside, CA and Denise Canfield of Winston, GA; fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be at 2:00 Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Carrollton, GA. In lieu of flowers donations in his honor may be made to the Carroll County Veteran’s Memorial Park.
