Nancy Hammond Grotnes
Nancy Hammond Grotnes of Sandy Springs, GA passed away peacefully on January 13, 2017. Nancy was born September 2, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to Mary McCoy and Melvin Kingsbury Hammond. Nancy graduated Valedictorian of Shorewood High School in Wisconsin, and was awarded a scholarship to Purdue University. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Omicron Nu honor society, and elected Treasurer of the Class of ’51. Nancy graduated second in her class in December 1950, and went to work for The Milwaukee Gas Light Company. On September 8, 1951 she married Eugene Grotnes. They lived in New Jersey for one year and then returned to his hometown of Park Ridge, IL. In 1956, the couple and their young son moved to Atlanta, GA where Eugene co-founded Atlanta Grotnes Machine Co with his brother. The couple later adopted their two daughters. Nancy was preceded in death by her son, Carl C. Grotnes II. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Eugene, daughters Gail Fenner, Connie Kramer Tom, daughter-in-law Alice Grotnes, 11 grandchildren, 3 great granddaughters, many nieces, nephews and friends. Nancy was an active member and volunteer at Peachtree Road Lutheran Church, and in the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Association. She volunteered in the library of her children’s schools. She loved to cook, read, golf, play bridge with Kappas, and spend time with her family and friends. A service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Peachtree Road Lutheran Church, 3686 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Carl Christian Grotnes II & Nancy Hammond Grotnes Scholarship in the School of Mechanical Engineering, University Development Office-ME, 585 Purdue Mall, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2088.
She was a dear friend for many years and will be missed by all who knew her.
A big thankyou for the many Thanksgiving dinners and Easter dinners. Memories that will last in my heart forever. Thanks for making us part of the family.
