Miriam Newman

Miriam Janice Hoskins Newman also known as “Mimi” passed away peacefully on November 9th, 2024 at Prima at Suwanee Creek under the care of Capstone Hospice. Miriam will be cremated, and per her wishes, there will be no memorial service.
Miriam was born in Memphis, TN on 11/03/1931 to parents Glenn Oliver Hoskins and Alvia Ann Ennis Hoskins. Miriam is preceded in death by her husband, John Samuel Newman and four children; Sherri Janice Newman; John Richard Newman; Charles Paul Newman; and Glen Thomas Newman.
Miriam and John were high school sweethearts. They lived on and loved Lake Lanier, spending most of their time out on their Stardust houseboat, Riding High. Miriam was an animal lover, and she was never without a beloved pet, most recently her cat, Lola.
In Miriam’s last years, she enjoyed staying in touch with her niece and nephews, Janette, Greg and Gene, and always found room for a bowl of ice cream or Hersheys milk chocolate.
Miriam was a gifted artist both painting and creative writing. Below, is one of Miriam’s poems she wrote from 1999:
Time steals the bloom from the cheek for it is a thief, But it dims the memory of loss and eases the aching grief It slowly saps youth’s vigor, twists the body in pain Then brings peace and quiet into the heart again.
Time races when joy abounds and the sun shines and drags slowly through our saddest of times It robs the step of it’s spring and tears lovers apart But mends the open wounds and heals the broken heart.
So do we denounce it as cruel and view it with hate as it pulls us protesting to our inevitable fate Or praise it’s tender mercy as a pure gift of love As it struggles to raise us to great glory above?
We will do neither for it has no form or face It flows like a river from nowhere to no place It won’t be revealed as a devil or a spirit of light Until we reach the end and the goal is in sight.
Then when no secrets hide, all things are made known And we look back on time, now still and alone We will know that this dark healer and thief Is an angel of mercy not demon or grief.
