Mell Aycock was born in Augusta, Georgia on Dec. 21, 1923. He was the oldest son of the late Dr. Mell and Elizabeth Aycock. He is survived by his sister Laura A. Askew of Asheville, N.C.
Mell grew up in Atlanta, Georgia until his father passed away when Mell was 12. His mother then moved the family back to her home in Augusta, Georgia.
Mell attended high school at Richmond Academy in Augusta. It was during his years there, as part of the Gallery Guard, that Mell attended the very first Masters Tournament and even had the pleasure of meeting Bobby Jones.
Mell’s collegiate years at Georgia Tech were abruptly interrupted by WWII. As a pilot in the Army Air Corps he flew the B-24 Bomber. After the war, Mell returned to graduate from Georgia Tech with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a member in the SAE fraternity.
His engineering career took him into the concrete pipe business. He married Betty Summerour of Monroe, Georgia on November 4, 1950. Mell’s work moved the couple from Monroe to Augusta and later to Baltimore, Maryland before they settled back in Atlanta where they kept residence for forty years. Retiring in Big Canoe, Mell enjoyed playing golf and relaxing in the mountain air. Betty and Mell made life long friendships everywhere they lived. They had 62 years of a wonderful married life. Betty passed away in 2012.
Mell Big Daddy is survived by his three children and spouses, Laura Smith Terry Smith, Dave Aycock Linda Aycock, Benjamin Aycock,Sonja Aycock, five grandchildren, Carl PratherLisa Cohan, Grayson Smith, Robert AycockLeona Rittenhouse, Laura Aycock, Benjamin Aycock Jr. and one great grandson, William Grayson Cohan Prather.
All that had the privilege of knowing Mell loved him dearly. He was an amazing father.
A memorial service will be planned in the near future.
The family wants to give a huge thank you to Arbor Terrace of East Cobb for all their love and amazing support.

    A great man and a true gentleman. Betty and Mell were a warm, sweet couple. Laughter was sure to be part of their day – miss them both. They raised a wonderful family. Together again in eternity.
