Mary Ann McCarthy, age 80, passed away July 8, 2015, in Decatur, Ga. Born in Lowell, Mass., Sept. 4, 1934, to Bernard Larkin and Esther Marshall, she earned a BA degree in 1956 from Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass., and was a teacher in Chelmsford, Mass., for two years. Her career included: flight attendant for United Airlines, co-owner of Skipper Sam’s Restaurant in Atlanta, and owner of Mary Ann’s Candies. She worked at Bramble Now Furniture Company in Atlanta for 15 years and was an officer when she died.
She married Denis McCarthy in 1959, and they enjoyed 52 years together until his death in 2011.
Known for her generous spirit, Mary Ann was loving and warm from the moment she met someone, and her graciousness extended into her volunteer work. She was a life-long volunteer for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and also volunteered for the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include three sisters: Bernadine Larkin Fountain of N.H., Joy Larkin Enis of Mass., and Marguerite Larkin Gilet of Mass; four children: Denis John, Kevin and wife Victoria, Matthew and wife Beth, and Brian and wife Cornelia; and seven grandchildren: Sean, Kayla, Meaghan, Madeline, Cameron, Garrett, and Thomas.
A memorial mass will be celebrated July 18 at 12:00 noon at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 2855 Briarcliff Rd. in Atlanta, and the family will receive friends at a reception after the service. Interment will be next summer at Swans Island, Maine. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 2050-C Chamblee-Tucker Rd., Atlanta Ga. 30341.
