Martha Trezevant Simpson Fitzgerald, 85, died Monday, October 3, 2016 at her residence, The Holbrook, in Gainesville Ga. She was born November 28, 1930, in Elberton, Ga, the daughter of the late Florence Arnold and William Harris Simpson, Jr. Her family moved to Athens, Ga where she attended Athens High School. She was a Phi Mu at University of Georgia, graduating with a BS degree in Home Economics. In freshman chemistry lab, she met William Thomas Fitzgerald, Jr. whom she married in 1952. Martha lived a life of commitment to her church, family and community. She will be remembered as a devoted clergy wife and our mother whom provided boundless love to us all and served as a constant reminder of grace. She raised eight children from Winter Park, FL to Sewanee, TN, back to Sarasota, FL then St Simons Island, GA before retiring to Edisto Beach, SC and her Shangri-la, Seed Lake, GA. At her passing, she was a member of Christ Church Frederica, SSI, GA.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Reverend William Thomas Fitzgerald, Jr. native of Augusta, Ga; brother, Harris Arnold Simpson of Atlanta, daughter and son-in-law, Martha Grey and R. Usher Thomason III of Athens; son, Thomas Patrick Fitzgerald, MD of Sarasota; daughter, Florence Fitzgerald of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Michael King, Sr. and Jennifer Fitzgerald of Athens, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Holmes B. Marchman, MD of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Wall and Sissy Fitzgerald of Atlanta, GA; son and daughter-in-law, David Barrington and Sandra Fitzgerald of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son and daughter –in-law, John Paul and Nancy Fitzgerald of Edisto Beach, SC. Grandchildren include Katherine Grey WoodChristian and Robert Usher Thomason IV, William Grey Fitzgerald, David Patrick Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Anne Fitzgerald, Michael King Fitzgerald, Jr. and Catherine DeMaris Fitzgerald, Anna Roswell Marchman, Sarah Anderson Marchman and Thomas Baker Marchman, Sadie Grey Fitzgerald and Martha “Maggie” Maguire Fitzgerald, Jordan Thomas Fitzgerald and Hailey Grace Fitzgerald. Great grandchildren include Margaret “Maggie-Jane “, Michael Usher and Martha Kienzle Wood. Remembrances may be made to Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, FL, Christ Church Frederica, Saint Simons Island or Pruitt Hospice Foundation, 1626 Jeurgens Court, Norcross, GA 30093. A High Choral Requiem Service will be held at a future date at The Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, Florida followed by interment at Christ Church Frederica, St Simons Island.
