Kenton Leon Kinard

Kenton Leon Kinard. Atlanta native, born July 28, 1945, passed Sunday, April 9, 2023 in Lawrenceville, Georgia, age 77. Survived by daughters Edie and Kelli, brother Joe, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents Ruth and Leon, and brother Mike.
Ken attended Headland Highschool in East Point and was a very proud graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology. After graduating, Ken worked at Georgia Tech Research Institute, in Facilities Management, until his retirement.
Known for his sense of humor and love of the great outdoors. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, or working in his vegetable garden. You could often find him in the kitchen or at the grill, making up a new recipe, trying to live off the land. He loved to tinker and “redneck” engineer new gadgets or tools to improve his outdoor living adventures. When an idea didn’t work, there was always duct tape. Ken valued adventures with family to the beach, mountains, and world travel. He also appreciated his solitude, to be quiet and revere the beauty of creation outside in the woods by himself. He was a talented artist, drawing and painting. He also enjoyed dancing to old records at night.
Ken battled throughout his life with depression and alcoholism. In his final moments, his mind was at peace, his body was sober, and his spirit left quietly. It is a guiding principle of Alcoholics Anonymous that each group be self-sustained and does not except outside donations. There are amazing resources for family members through Al-Anon and Alateen even if your alcoholic is not ready, you can be. In lieu of flowers, please consider offering to attend one of these meetings with someone who is scared to take the first step, the next step, or the first step again.
His ashes will be spread privately in a place he loved and cherished. Remember Ken as a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, cousin, and friend. Ken’s family would like you to think of a time he exemplified these things and honor that memory of him.
