Joanne Palmer Upchurch passed away at home in her sleep of natural causes on April 19th.  A native of Atlanta, Joanne was born on Cascade Road on August 10, 1931 and lived in the Atlanta area all of her life.  She is survived by her sister Gay Antoun, her children Ben Upchurch Jr, Elizabeth Fee and Leslie Prohaska, as well as seven grandchildren: Casey, Christopher, Annie, Katie, James, Meggie and Aaron.

Joanne attended university at Wesleyan College in Macon and married Major General Ben Upchurch Sr.  She was a special education teacher at the Oak Knoll elementary school in East Point for years and enjoyed working with special needs children.  She enjoyed reading, shopping, family time together and vacationing at the beach.

She is a member of the Cremation Society of Georgia and her family will have a celebration of her life in early May.

    Joanne was a dear friend and she taught me a lot about parenting my daughter when we worked together at Oak Knoll. For more than 15 years, after we all left Oak Knoll, we met to celebrate the Christmas holidays. I’ll miss her special luncheon dishes and the very unique presents she had for our group.
    Her light will always shine in my heart.
