James Ryan Jim Marietta, age 58, died March 17, 2010 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta after a short illness. He was born in Joliet, Illinois and graduated from Lockport High School. He was the youngest son of Clarice Ryan Marietta, deceased 2002, and Robert. L. Marietta, deceased 1977.
He is survived by Letsa Sarah Mallette Doster Marietta, wife and companion; and sons Ryan Hamilton Marietta of Chicago and Fisher Crum Marietta of Rome, GA. Other survivors are a brother, Robert Mary Carlson, Cincinnati, Ohio; and sisters, Joan Carlson Krumlide, Palm Coast Florida; Virginia Carlson Thompson, Lake Barrington Shores, Illinois: and Jean Marietta Henry , Palm Coast, Florida.
Marietta graduated from Purdue in 1971 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science. He went on to graduate fourth in his class and Suma Cum Laude from the University of Georgia Law School in 1977 where he was a member of the Georgia Law Review and the Order of the Coif. Marietta was also a founding member of the Coot Hounds, a loose law school group. In 1984 , he received his masters of law from Emory University, with a concentration in tax law. He began his career as an Staff Associate with the Internal Revenue Service in 1977. From 1981 to 1987, he practiced law as associate with Alston and Byrd, Atlanta, Ga. Since 1988, Marietta has practiced law at Bank of America, focusing on commercial lending.
A devoted family man, Marietta’s principle focus was his family and their well being. Marietta has been a steadfast rock for Ryan, Fisher and his wife, Letsa. An ardent advocate for education, Marietta strove to ensure that his children received an excellent education throughout their formative years. He constantly supported and attended his sons’ activities, including swimming, debate, football, baseball, and wrestling. His legacy lives on with both of boys graduating this fall with their master’s degrees. As devoted as he was to his family, Marietta was also committed to animal welfare, especially those of dogs. All of the family thrived on their love for their most recent family pets, Atsro and Sam.

A memorial service will be Friday, 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road NE Atlanta, GA. The family will receive friends at their home immediately after the service at his home, 73 Palisades Road NE Atlanta, GA. You may sign the guest registry at www.caringbridge.org
