James Kenneth McKinney

James Kenneth McKinney, 79, of Kennesaw, Georgia passed away on May 9th, 2017. Ken was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 19, 1937.
In 1956, he graduated from the Episcopal Academy, Merion, PA. At Episcopal, Ken was one of the few to earn letters in four sports. He was also awarded with the 1955 All Inter-Academic Gold Football Award presented by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Ken graduated from Michigan State University in 1960 and went on to post graduate work at Villanova University.
In 1960, he married Emilie “Mollie” Maxwell of Philadelphia. They moved to Augusta, Georgia where Ken worked at Riverside Mills before joining Stratton Industries, Cartersville, GA in 1976. Ken completed his career with Shaw Industries, from 1987 until his retirement in 1998.
Ken was a voracious reader, unpublished historian, joke teller extraordinaire and avid dog rescuer. We know Ken would agree with Will Rogers that, “if there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”
Ken is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mollie McKinney. He is also survived by three daughters, Nancy Vita, Christine McKinney Shivers, and Suzanne Smith, his grandchildren Andrew and Emilie Vita, Max and Mollie Shivers. Ken’s brother, David and his family reside in the Atlanta area.
A private memorial service will be held June 3rd, 11:00 a.m. at St. Teresa’s Episcopal Church, 5725 Fords Road, Acworth, Ga 30101. Internment of ashes will follow the service at St. James Cemetery, Marietta. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Teresa’s Episcopal Church Building Fund. I missed out because I never got to meet Ken…….I really wanted to tell him how much I love his family members I am fortunate enough to have in my life. Constant thought and prayer. We love you, (John and) Charlotte Malone
Dear Nancy,
I wish I had known your dad and am at a bit of a loss for words as I enter this message in the Guestbook. It feels kind of lopsided given that you knew my dad so well, for years, and were with him just days before his passing. From reading Jim’s obituary I can tell he was an impressive man. He had to have had a terrific sense of humor because you sure do and I suspect you got that trait from him. Hoping the bond you share with your mother and sisters will help heal and you derive strength from its unity. Miss you. Love, Martha Hicks Barry
Mollie and family,

To the McKinney family. We are so sorry for your loss. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
To the McKinney family,
We are all very heartbroken to hear about Mr. McKinney’s passing. He always brought a ray of sunshine to us when he visited us at the clinic. We all enjoyed chatting with him and will miss him dearly. Over the years that he’d been a client of ours he’d become much more to us, he’d become family. He cared about each one of us personally and we cared about him in return and it was reflected in the way that he interacted with all of us. We feel his loss tremendously and will always treasure the memories that we have of him.
