James H. Maxey

James H. Maxey, PH.D, age 79, died on January 5, 2017 at his residence. Jim Maxey was a man whom loved life, family, friends, sports, children and teaching. His sense of humor made all situations more enjoyable. Jim was valedictorian at Buda High School, graduated with a major in math from Illinois Wesleyan University and a master’s from Illinois State University. He then became a math teacher for 4 years at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. In 1968, Jim was given a fellowship and assistantship at the University of Michigan where he earned his PH.D. in educational psychology.
In 1970, he and family moved to Atlanta where he joined the academic faculty where he taught research design and statistics for 30 years. In 2000, Jim retired and remained active with his grandchildren, golf, and bridge and even took art lessons in retirement.
Jim was a devoted husband and father. He took enormous pleasure from the successes his wife, Annette, and their son, Greg, achieved. However, his greatest thrill was the birth of his three grandsons Michael, Tyler and Davis. He happily engaged in any of their interests and spent untold hours with them and supporting them in their multiple activities.
Jim is survived by many close friends and family which will miss him dearly. There will be a small family only service. Jim hopes that you will consider giving to the Atlanta Food Bank in his name www.acfb.org or any other charity that is important to you. Online condolences may be expressed at www.csog.com.
Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family for your loss. Sincerely, the Poulakos Family
Dr. Maxey was my advisor in my PH.D. program at GSU. He was helpful and kind and I owe him a lot. My condolences on your loss. He was a great man.
Greg and family,
I remember Jim well and appreciated his advice over many years at Galloway, especially as I prepared for graduate studies. He was always so proud of Greg and a staunch supporter of Galloway’s basketball team and its faculty.
You are in my thoughts and payers.
God looked around his garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, ‘Peace be Thine’.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
We miss you, Papa!
We send our love and prayers in remembrance of our dear friend Jim.
Love,
Ken, Betty, Cindy and Michael
Jim and I were classmates at the old Buda township high school. He was one if my best friends. We were fortunate to meet several times in our adult years, when my husband and I happened to be in Atlanta, and when he was in Bloomington, Il. He was a special man, I have great memories.
