I was very sad to hear of Jim’s passing. I served with Jim in Vietnam. He was a great soldier and a real friend of mine. I had hoped to take him to the 3/5 Cavalry reunion next summer in Benning. I will cry I am sure when I see his paver on our walk of honor by our war memorial. Farewell my friend till I see you in Fidler’s Green
In 1960 and 1961 (then 1st. Lt.) Tipton was communications officer in the 3rd Rcon Squadron, 14th Armored Cavalry. I was privileged to be his driver. I was a pfc at the time. Of all the officers I met in my short time in the army, he was the best. I’m glad I got to serve under him
My name is Al Claiborne, and I live in Winston-Salem North Carolina. I am originally from Brownsville Tennessee, LtCol. Tipton’s hometown. When I was in the eighth grade over the 1965-66 school year, Mr. Jim came to our school as then-Captain Tipton to tell our school assembly about a place we had not heard of, called Vietnam. He had been there over 1964-65 as a MACV military adviser. Almost 50 years later, I had reconnected with Mr. Jim, and he had helped me a lot in reconstructing his own personal history of service in Vietnam as a part of my nonprofit’s project. I never met him in person, after that day in 1965-66 in Brownsville, but I wanted to express my condolences to his family and my thanks to him for his service, especially during a very difficult time for our country. Thank you, Mr. Jim…
Dear Betty, Sam and Missy, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
