Gary D Zweifel was born in Monticello Wisconsin on September 25, 1945, the fourth of five sons of Alvena Rindy Zweifel and Dwight John Zweifel. He graduated as valedictorian from Monticello High School and then attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated cum laude in June of 1967. While at Wisconsin he served as Student Body President and was instrumental in guiding the students through many of the Vietnam student demonstrations. His studies at Wisconsin were in Political Science and specifically in political geography which remained an interest of his throughout his lifetime.
After graduation from Wisconsin, Mr. Zweifel attended the University of Virginia Law School graduating in the spring of 1971. He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1971. His first legal position was as an associate attorney in the law firm of Powell Goldstein Frazer and Murphy.
In 1975 Mr. Zweifel formed the Zweifel Law Firm concentrating in a trust and estate practice. In 1980 he merged his practice with the law firm of Lokey and Bowden where he practiced until 1988 when he joined the Firm of Hurt Richardson Garner and Cadenhead. In 1990 he again practiced as the Zweifel Law firm with law offices at Colony Square.
From 1975 through 1988 Mr. Zweifel served as a county guardian and administrator for Fulton County. In 1990, Mr. Zweifel organized a company called Private Fiduciary Services and Guardianship Services of Georgia which served as private fiduciary services for his clients. As such Mr. Zweifel acted as guardian, trustee executor and administrator of numerous estates. Also, Mr. Zweifel began a practice that concentrated on fiduciary litigation.
Mr. Zweifel served as President of the Fiduciary Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Was a founding member of the International Guardianship Association and served as a board member to the National Guardian Association. He was a long time member of the Atlanta Estate Planning Council where he served on the Board of Directors. He was fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Council and was selected each year as a Super Lawyer by Atlanta Magazine. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Stonewall Bar Association.
Mr. Zweifel was a member of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta and the Old Warhorse Lawyers Club.
Mr. Zweifel was a life-long member of the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club and served as President in 1976. He also established the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Foundation and served as its first President. He was active at All Saints Episcopal Church.
Mr. Zweifel is survived by his partner, Peter R. Cranton, his three children Anne Steiner, Christopher Zweifel, and Whitney Zweifel, and five granddaughters, Eleanor, Lauren, Evelyn Mayshin and Julia. He is survived by his four brothers, Robert, Jim, David, and John.
There will be a funeral service held at All Saints Church, 634 West Peachtree ST NW, Atlanta, GA, at 11AM on Saturday, February 4th.
