Elizabeth 'Betty' Aycock

Elizabeth, “Betty,” Aycock was born in Monroe, GA on November 24, 1928. She was the middle child of the late Virginia and James William Summerour and sister of the late James William Jr. and Robert Summerour. Betty grew up in the Monroe community, and graduated from the University of Georgia as a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. On November 4, 1950 she married Mell Aycock, WWII pilot and chemical engineer from Georgia Tech. Mell’s work took the couple from Monroe to Augusta, and later to Baltimore, MD before the two settled in Atlanta, where they kept residence for 40 wonderful years. During their years in Baltimore, Betty and Mell were very active in the local Presbyterian Church, where they mentored and counseled the youth group which often met at their home in Towson. While in Atlanta, Betty worked for a number of years as a real estate agent for Harry Norman Realtors covering the Buckhead area. However, she was unquestionably proudest of her role as a mother to three, grandmother to five, and close friend to countless individuals. Betty, later known as “Mama Bebe,” received her nickname due to a mispronunciation of her real name by one of her grandchildren, which ultimately stuck. Ever the happy and selfless admirer of others, Mama Bebe never ceased to let others know of her pride in their accomplishments, no matter the size of the achievements in question. Mama Bebe will forever be remembered for her unconditional love for family and friends, and for her enduring spirit. When she made a friend it was for life, evidenced by all the close relationships she maintained throughout her life’s journey.
Betty is survived by her husband Mell Aycock, her three children and spouses, Laura Smith husband Terry Smith, Dave Aycock wife Linda Aycock, and Benjamin Aycock wife Sonja Aycock, five grandchildren, Carl Prather wife Lisa Cohan, Grayson Barber husband Chris Barber, Robert and Laura Aycock, Benjamin Aycock Jr., her ample extended family and countless lifelong friends. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the medical research facility of your choice. Memorial services will be January 5 Saturday 1:00 PM at The Chapel at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Marietta, Ga.
