Elizabeth “Babe” or “Betty” (Wichrowski) Stankus, age 95, previously of Dunwoody, GA passed away peacefully in Sandy Springs, GA on Saturday, February 10, 2018 with her daughter nearby. She was born in Manor, PA on October 30, 1922 to Walter Wichrowski (predeceased) and Mary (Yanizeski) Wichrowski (predeceased). Sister to her late brothers Charles Wichrowski and Edward Wichrowski. Beloved wife of Rudolph J. Stankus (predeceased in 2006) for 59 years and loving mother to James Stankus (predeceased in 2015).
Elizabeth, known as “Babe” to her family and close friends, grew up in western Pennsylvania and acquired her Beauty Culture Operator license after graduating from Norwin High School in Irwin, PA. She married Rudy Stankus in 1946 and devoted herself to being a homemaker and loving mother to two children. Later, Betty worked for many years at Joseph Horne Co., a well-known department store in the Pittsburgh area, where she specialized in fine china and silverware retail sales. She was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary as well as the Westmoreland City Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary while always being a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Irwin, PA.
The couple relocated to the Atlanta suburb of Dunwoody, GA in 1980, and eventually retired there. Elizabeth had always been an accomplished seamstress and was known for her gourmet baking skills in addition to her love of cooking Polish food, especially for her family during the Christmas and Easter holidays. She was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody, GA and will be remembered most for her positive, joyful outlook on life no matter what circumstances she faced in her 95 years. She believed in God, treasured her family and was always grateful for those who loved and cared for her along the way.
Elizabeth Stankus is survived by her loving daughter, Stephanie Stankus of Sandy Springs, GA. A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 11:30 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mount Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338. The family is also planning a service at a later date in her native Pennsylvania.
