Resided in: Athens, GA

Eileen Sutton Becker, 90, died on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at her home at 150 Curtis Drive.
A native of Albany, Georgia, Mrs. Becker was a daughter of the late Lilly Mae and Harrison Sutton. She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in law, David Becker of Portland, Oregon, and Karl Becker and Nancy Bird of Cordova, Alaska.
Mrs. Becker studied stenography at Georgia Southwestern College and business administration at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She worked as a clerk and stenographer for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., during World War II. There, she met the love of her life, Alfred Becker, shortly after the war.
Eileen and Al spent three decades traveling the world as Al served in the U.S. Foreign Service in Colombia, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Chile, and later, during Al’s tenure as a professor at the State University College of New York at Buffalo, in Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Siena, Italy.
After Al and Eileen retired to Athens in 1986, they joined Covenant Presbyterian Church. Eileen devoted much of her time to church activities, especially those involving youth. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Athens Woman’s Club.
After Al’s death in 2001, Eileen continued to be very active with many community groups focused on helping people, such as the Casa de Amistad. She remained an extraordinary traveler: in her 80’s, she visited Alaska, Mexico’s Copper Canyon, Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, and returned to Guatemala where she and her family had lived in the 1950’s.
Eileen’s generosity and positive spirit were an inspiration to many. Just weeks ago, while recovering from a shoulder replacement, she was planning her return to church activities and to travel to China.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Athens, with the Revs. Beecher Mathes and Mark Harper officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Eileen’s name may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1065 Gaines School Road, Athens, GA 30605. The family will direct a division of these memorials among several of Eileen’s favorite charities.
