Ms Dorothy M. Speights passed away peacefully March 23, 2020 during a brief stay at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was 83 years old.
Dorothy resided in and called New York City home for over 40 years, where she owned and operated her own dry cleaning business for many years. She later became a nurse’s assistant fulfilling an earlier dream of working in the healthcare system.
Upon retirement, she moved to Atlanta and resided at Lutheran Towers and became a member of the Lutheran Redeemer Church. She was extremely outgoing and full of energy until illness curtailed her activities. Dorothy found her artistic side in Atlanta and loved painting, creating beautiful handmade greeting cards, singing and dancing. She enjoyed life to the fullest and always celebrated with family and friends. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
She was a very protective and loving mother of her children and oh so proud of their accomplishments.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: 4 sons, James P. Speights (Laura); Robert F. Speights (Paula); Stanley McHenry (Gladys) and Franklin Hamilton (Audrey)……3 daughters, Gladys V. Jenkins (Frank); Patsy L. Mongo (Jerry) and Joy D. Griggs; 2 sisters Cornelius and Mozell; 9 grandchildren; Shamia Hamilton, Shari Hamilton, Latasha M. Mongo, Jordan V. McLaughlin, Alicia McHenry, Stanley McHenry Jr, Aheshia Spencer, Amanda Sylvester and Keith Cooper; 15 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves a legacy of beautiful memories to be cherished by her loving friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family asks if you would consider a donation to the American Kidney Foundation in Dorothy’s name.

I will cherish our friendship forever. I will miss the laughter and your caring lovable ways. My daughter Shanna Lang will miss you too because she always said we were so much alike that was why we hot along so well.
My deepest sympathy to the family and I ask God to bless all of you abundantly.
I am lost trying to figure out how to move on without having your physical presence. I will miss our talks about everything and just being able to vent about everything. Yes, I can here you say I am just speaking on it. You were my
hero mama. You know mama was what I would say you to make you laugh because it was so southern. I think about you daily and I miss you more than words can express. It is so hard to say goodbye so I won’t. I carry you in my heart
mama. Thanks you for time we had together.
