Betty Sue Cumby Vlass passed away peacefully Sunday, January 17, 2021. Betty was born at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia April 8, 1930. She was the last surviving sibling of the Cumby family of Sylvan Hills, GA. Betty is predeceased by her husband John James Vlass of 54 years.

Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was affectionately called “Meemaw” by many. She was known for her hospitality and welcomed everyone to her home. There are many fond memories around the “Vlass Pool” with friends and family enjoying her famed barbeques.

Betty loved antiquing and cooking. In her younger days, she volunteered in all her children’s various activities. She loved babies and children. And every child that met her ended up in her arms and loving her too!!!! She had a true gift.

Betty truly enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren. One day, she had two of her grandkids in the car. She was not particularly proficient at driving and was pulled over by a policeman (for a minor traffic violation, we are sure). The young policemen walked up to the car, and immediately Betty pointed her finger at his chest and said, “Do Not Scare the Children!” The policeman quickly apologized and went on his way.

Betty is survived by her 4 loving children, Janice Helmer and husband Percy of Cumming, GA, Barry Vlass and wife Susan of Roswell, GA, Johnny Vlass and wife Judy of Cartersville, GA and Kim Asip and husband Billy of Dunwoody, GA; 10 grandchildren Trey Helmer, Tatum Whitesell, Kelly Culbertson, Drew Vlass, Sidney Bernardo, John Vlass, III, Katie Edwards, Tassie Boland, Wil Asip and Ali Asip; and 14 great-grandchildren.

We will have a Celebration of Betty’s life Easter weekend with immediate family.
