Betty Altman Moore

Betty Altman Moore passed away on September 21, 2024, exactly one month before her 90th birthday.
The daughter of Gertrude and Norman Altman, she was born and raised in Waycross. She graduated from what is now Georgia Southern University. After teaching school for a year, she realized she wanted to see the world. So, she made a career change to the airline industry and was able to travel the world—three times, in fact. She was the corporate accounts manager at the Atlanta office of Pan American Airlines until they went bankrupt.
She later retired as office manager from the movie industry union IATSE Local 479 at the age of 75. During all those busy career days she often took her son and two stepchildren to happy breaks in the Caribbean islands, California and Hawaii. For herself she loved many places in the world and had an attachment to Hong Kong where she went four times.
Upon retirement, Ms. Moore lived quite a productive life. She was an active member of the Lucky Shoals Best Friend Club senior group and a Gwinnett County Tai Chi group. She was active in local politics and served on the board of her neighborhood HOA for many years. Two years ago, she persistently contacted the Gwinnett Department of Transportation about the dangers of the intersection at Britt and Old Norcross roads. Within six months, there were left turn signals installed on each of the four traffic lights. A party was held in her honor for getting this intersection fixed. Everyone who knows about her quest to make this intersection safe calls it “Betty’s Light.”
An avid birdwatcher, Ms. Moore was a member of the Audubon Society. She eagerly participated in every Great Backyard Bird Count event of the society. She attended plays and concerts, grew an abundance of flowers and vegetables, sewed prolifically and cooked many a gourmet meal.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers: Forest, Edward and Coleman Altman, her stepson, Douglas F. Moore, and her son, Stephen G. Moore. She is survived by her sister, China Altman of Boston, MA, and her stepdaughter, Nancy Moore Wilson of Warner Robins. She is missed by her many neighbors and friends.
A private celebration of her life will be held later this year.
