Born in: Louisville, KY
Resided in: Roswell, GA

Anna Griswold Nichols died on February 27, 2023, from natural causes associated with dementia.

Anna was born on April 8, 1929, to Howard C. Griswold and Mary Lewis Griswold in Louisville, KY. As the middle sister of three girls, Anna was known as outgoing, mischievous, and quick-witted. In her youth, she was a canoeing counselor at Camp Meenagha in Wisconsin. Her time there influenced her to give summer camp experiences to her three daughters. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1951, where she made lifelong friends with whom she exchanged letters for over 70 years.

While visiting her uncle at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, she met the love of her life, Jack Nichols. They married in 1953 and soon after moved to Georgia, where she spent the balance of her life. Anna and Jack were early and active members of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, where she served in the Adult and Bell Choirs. She enjoyed music and singing during car rides, gatherings with friends, and cooking in the kitchen. She played the ukulele and sang alto in community choral groups. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and for various charitable organizations. Many happy years were spent golfing and swimming at Cherokee Town and Country Club, traveling, hosting friends and family sharing tasty meals, and spending time on Hilton Head Island. In recent years, Anna lived at St. Anne’s Terrace and enjoyed reading and spending time with family.

Anna was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, John (Jack) Harmon Nichols, and her sister, Charlotte Griswold Bowden. She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Beth Williams (Jim) of Canton, Peggy Fallon (Doug) of Roswell, and Shelby Nichols of Atlanta; five grandchildren, James Williams, Virginia Collie (Tracy), and Joseph Williams; Anna Fallon and John Fallon (Sarah); great-grandchild, Jacob Williams; sister Mary Clifton Horrigan of Portsmouth, NH; and many nieces and nephews. Anna was grateful for her many blessings – her husband whom she adored and missed, her family whom she loved and depended upon, and her many friends over the course of her long life.

A memorial service will be at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 3098 St. Anne’s Lane NW, Atlanta, on March 18 at 2 P.M. with a reception following. In the spirit of Anna’s love for
bright colors and red lipstick, those in attendance are encouraged to dress in kind.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church.
