Andrew Angelo Marinos
Andrew A. Marinos, age 92, of Atlanta, Georgia, died May 1, 2017. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, January 8, 1925. He graduated from Tech High School, and served in World War II from 1943 to 1946 in the Army Air Corps as an aerial gunner. He then graduated from Georgia Tech in 1950 with a degree in Industrial Management. In 1952, he married Peggie Stanley. Mr. Marinos was employed at First National Bank of Atlanta [Wachovia] Bank for 35 years, serving as Vice President in Corporate Lending from 1965 until his retirement in 1986. In addition, he was past president of First National’s Employees Club. He was also a graduate of Banking School of the South at Louisiana State University. .
Mr. Marinos’ parents were Angel and Katherine Marinos, both immigrants from Greece. Andy’s talents in working with wood began as a young man, when he built boats and made water skis. He and Peggie and his friend Tony Dinos put together a waterski show for entertainment at local races. He and his young wife became quite talented on water skis and were featured in an Atlanta Journal Magazine article in July 1956. From boat building Andy became an avid and talented woodworker and wood turner. Not only did he furnish his home with many of his artistic designs, he also especially enjoyed making items as gifts for his friends as well as for their children. Mr. Marinos was a member of the Woodworkers Guild of Georgia, the Georgia Association of Wood Turners ,and the American Association of Wood Turners. He contributed this talent to the enhancement of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, where he was a long-time and faithful member.
Andy will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his willingness to help others, his generosity, and his genuine friendships with others. He is survived by two nieces, Kathy Sonnenberg of Gatesville, Texas, and Connie Bailey of Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as many cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 3098 St. Anne’s Lane NW, Atlanta, GA 30327 or the charity of your choice. A thanksgiving for the life of Andrew Marinos will be held at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church on May 13, at 11:00 a.m.
