Born in: Columbus, Georgia
Resided in: Acworth, Georgia

Roger Lee Snell, 70, of Acworth, Georgia, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 3, 2025.

Roger was a devoted husband to Carolyn Snell, a loving father to Christopher and Michael, and a proud father-in-law to Kristen. To his granddaughters, Emmy and Amelia, he was known simply as “Papa”—a role he cherished in his later years.

Born on May 28, 1955, in Columbus, Georgia, Roger was raised by his mother, Ann, and her husband, Duel “Pete” Peterman. Their example shaped Roger’s lifelong values: duty, discipline, resilience, and curiosity.

Roger earned a degree in Fire Science and Chemistry in 1980 and began his career as a firefighter with the Phenix City Fire Department. He later served as a federal firefighter at Fort Benning from 1984 to 1998. From 1998 until his retirement in 2015, he led with distinction as Fire Marshal and Fire Chief at Fort McPherson in Atlanta and Fort Gordon in Augusta. Known for his deep technical knowledge and unwavering commitment to safety and service, Roger set high standards and led with integrity, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the departments he served.

Though reserved and contemplative by nature, Roger was someone others knew they could count on. He will be remembered for his steady presence, strong character, and quiet acts of love.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; sons, Chris and Michael; daughter-in-law, Kristen; granddaughters, Emmy and Amelia; sister, Glayline Varner; niece, Jennifer Eberly (Dr. Matt Eberly); grandnieces, Lauren and Rachel Eberly; uncle (more like a brother), Jamie Sawyer; cousins, Brandi Pittmon and Sandi Vaughn; and brothers-in-law, Buddy and Calvin Powell.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Phenix City, Alabama, where the Snells were active members as a young family from 1991 to 1997.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church of Phenix City.

  1. Will Powell says:

One of my earliest memories of Roger was when he and aunt Carolyn were still in college and Roger took a ribbon from the school and wrapped it around his forehead. I can recall the first house they lived in after they were married. They owned a basset hound named Jon Jon. I remember their second home in Phenix City with a steeeep drive way in front and the brand new home in River Ridge. I always enjoyed talking to Roger at family events. He hired me to help with projects from time to time when I was a kid. I remember fondly of us working and running around town to round up supplies for those projects. He was always pleasant to be around. I can remember spending Christmas Eve at Roger and aunt Carolyn’s house and aunt Carolyn letting everyone know that Roger had prepared all the food. I never could tell if she wanted to give him the credit for the work or if she was preemptively avoiding blame if someone didn’t enjoy the food. Carolyn, you should have taken some of the credit because it was always great.
Roger was always slightly reserved but never resisted a conversation with anyone. His loss will be felt especially by aunt Carolyn and his son’s Chris and Michael. Roger and Carolyn created an extraordinary life for themselves and their children. You all have so much to be proud of. Although Roger is no longer with us, his was a life well lived. Live with the memories because they are a treasure to be cherished. We love you all. God bless.

  2. Glayline Snell Varner says:

I will miss you everyday the rest of my life. A sister couldn’t have had a better brother always there when I needed you and always had my back. Your laugh made me happy just listening to you laugh so hard when you got tickled. Watching you curl your hair with a finger when you were tired and you would quietly go off to bed. No matter how old you were you still had those habit. I love and will miss everyday! My love to Carolyn, Michael and Christopher.
