John Howard Stanford

John Howard “Big John” Stanford, 78, of Powder Springs, Georgia, departed peacefully from this life on June 10, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Known affectionately by friends and family alike as “Big John,” he leaves behind a large and loving family and a legacy of steadfast leadership, quiet strength, and devoted community service.
Born on November 4, 1946 in Atlanta Georgia to father John David Stanford and Anna E Stanford of Mableton Georgia, John embodied the quiet dignity and strong work ethic he became known for throughout his life. Growing up, John was shaped by the values of hard work, honesty, and respect; traits he carried into every aspect of his life. He proudly served in the 3rd Battalion, 9th Regiment of the United States Marine Corps and was a decorated combat veteran awarded the Purple Heart for his actions in Vietnam from 1966-1969. He later married the love of his life, Candyse Jordan, and they built a strong family together. He was a long time resident of Douglas County Georgia, and was one of the founding members of Shallowford Heights Swim and Tennis Club. On Saturday mornings you would find John preparing the pool, fixing the pumps, and throwing out the charcoal for cooking later that day. He was always ready to throw anyone next to him into the water with a big smile on his face. He built a strong community, and gave many life lessons to all around him. John worked in the flooring business throughout the Atlanta metro area and was a respected expert in the field. Though he is gone from our sight, his love and steadfast strength will remain with us always.
He is survived by his wife Candyse Stanford, his son John D Stanford ”Bubba” of Powder Springs, daughter Jennifer Fitzgerald, husband John Fitzgerald, granddaughter Vivian B. Fitzgerald, all of Marietta, grandson John Stanford Hamilton and father Richard Hamilton of Dallas, Carey M. Kitchens of Douglasville, Joshua Strickland, wife Jessica Strickland, granddaughter Lillian H Strickland of Franklin, His brothers and sisters Michael E.
