HERBERT L. RAAB, JR.

September 27, 1930 – May 6, 2025

Herbert L. Raab quietly and peacefully ended his journey on earth and is now in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  He passed away at home on May 6, 2025 at the age of 94 and is survived by his wife, Ruth; just 6 days shy of their 74th wedding anniversary.

He also leaves behind his three children, David, Diane and Susan and their spouses, 4 grandchildren and their spouses and 6 great grandchildren.

Herb was born in Irvington, NJ in 1930 where he went to Irvington High School and Seton Hall University. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Mitchell, and they had their first two children, David and Diane there. They moved to Florida in 1957, living in Hialeah and Miami where they had their third child, Susan.  Herb worked for the City of Miami Police Department and also earned advanced degrees from FIU and U of MN.

While in Miami, Herb and Ruth lived a full and busy life with many friends and activities with Grove Community Church, Florida Bible College, the Police Benevolent Association and Westwood Optimist Park, to name just a few. After retiring, they moved to Marietta, GA where Herb was active in Stephens Ministry and Starting Point through FUMC Marietta and North Point Community Church, respectively. He also started a waterproofing business, worked with the US Census Bureau and played some tennis and golf, even working as a starter at several local golf courses.

Herb loved life and loved people. He always had stories to tell from his 23 years of police service in Miami. He had worked his way up from a rookie to the position of Captain when he retired in 1979.  Herb coached little league football and mentored his players, many of whom have kept in touch with him to this day.  Herb truly loved golf and helped others with tips on how to improve their game. He even had an opportunity to teach kindergarten……..Kindergarten Cop sound familiar?

Some of his fondest memories were when he and Ruth bought an RV and traveled around the country for 6 months. They had the opportunity to be chased by a buffalo herd, encounter bears in Montana and one day even stopping their runaway RV going downhill. In addition, they passed through California where Dad gave advice to Telly Savalas “Kojak” on set as to how a real life cop does his job! Another day he joked around with Starsky and Hutch.  Dad was truly the star those days!

Herb’s greatest joy in life was telling people about his Savior and wanting people to know the Lord. He would ask, “Do you know where you’re going when you die?” and then proceed to tell them about Jesus! And now he is with his Lord, eternally happy, healthy, and whole!
He will be missed and loved forever.
