Thomas Owen Maher, born to Edith Bishop Smedley and Thomas Delaney Maher on March 5th, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA went to be with the Lord at the age of 87 on June 13th, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Helen Gregory Maher, and his children, Thomas Byron Maher and Rebecca Maher Everett. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 26th at 11am with reception to follow at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 2015 West Cherokee Ave., Cartersville, GA 30120.
Tom was a beloved father, husband and friend to many. He graduated from Swarthmore College with a degree in civil engineering in 1956 and graduated from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business with an MBA in 1958. He worked for the President’s Office of Emergency Preparedness and the Environmental Protection Agency.
He was a member of the Philadelphia Union League, an elder and active member of the churches he attended, a volunteer with the Red Cross, and a member of the Cartersville Retired Men’s Club. His interests were in Roan Mountain, Tennessee history, family civil war history, WWII history, and model trains. Tom was great, great grandson of Civil War General, John T. Wilder, whose battles at Chickamauga and Chattanooga Tennessee were pivotal in the union victory. Flowers can be sent to the church.
