Thomas Edward McCoy, Jr.

Thomas Edward McCoy, Jr, Captain USN (retired), died at his home in Cedartown, Ga at the age of 95.

Thomas was preceded in death by his first wife, Jimmie Anderson McCoy, his daughter, Jane McCoy Muse, his sister, Sue McCoy Smith Brinkley and his brother James Edwin McCoy. He is survived by his wife Virginia Lynn Carpenter Lewis McCoy, his sister Dorothy McCoy Spencer Hopper and her spouse Sheldon Hopper, his daughters and their spouses Debra McCoy- Massey and Joe Massey, Gale McCoy-Flinchum and Nat Flinchum, his stepchildren, Richelle Schack, Teresa Thorne and her spouse Jeoff Thorne, Devin Lewis, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas was born in Huntsville, Alabama to Thomas E. McCoy and Anna Pearl Woodard McCoy on 9/28/1926. He grew up in Lindale Georgia and enlisted in the Navy in 1943 serving in a bomber
squadron in the Pacific in WWII. After his enlistment he remained in the naval reserves and attended West Georgia College and The University of Georgia Extension (now Georgia State University) receiving a BA. After graduation he worked in the insurance industry for several years until being recommissioned as a Supply Corp officer in the US Navy. He was deployed on a destroyer in the Korean conflict, taught supply logistics at the Navy Supply Corp School in Athens Georgia, served in the Pacific Fleet before becoming the Supply Corp officer for the USS Coral Sea from 1967-1969 during Viet Nam for which he earned a Bronze Star. Captain McCoy was assigned to Supply Logistics Planning in Washington DC from 1969-1974 coordinating the naval logistics plan for 1975-1980 for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. For that tour he earned a Legion of Merit Award. He retired a Captain in 1974 at the age of 46 and worked as a real estate agent and broker as his second career before fully retiring. He loved travel, museums everywhere, growing any kind of plant, cooking, football, bike riding, line dancing, the Episcopal Church, volunteering and the company of family and friends. He lived in many places but settled in the place he was originally rooted.

A memorial service will be held at Saint James Episcopal Church in Cedartown Ga. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice in his honor.
