Mrs. Jean Jones Rhodes, age 70 of Rome, Georgia, passed away Monday, July 26, 2010. A native of Floyd County, Mrs. Rhodes was born on August 15, 1939, the daughter of the late Edgar Hoyt and Philas Jones. She moved away from Rome in 1963 and returned in 1979.
In 1969, Mrs. Rhodes was chairman of the Walton County, Georgia Heart Association campaign in which she received a medallion for meritorious service in the fight against heart disease.
Jean was an avid golfer. She served as vice president and president of the Ladies’ Golf Association at Coosa Country Club for a number of years.
Mrs. Rhodes was coordinator and master of ceremonies at the Harbin Clinic Breast Cancer Survivors Banquet and fashion show for two years.
Jean was a woman of strong faith. She was baptized as a young girl in Dykes Creek. A long-time member of Second Avenue Baptist Church in Rome, she headed the committee for the church in their part of the local Community Kitchen.
Jean was foremost a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was beautiful inside and out and her sweet smile and presence lit up a room. She made everyone feel special.
Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her husband of 49 years, Charles Eugene Rhodes; one daughter, Gina Rhodes Welborn; three grandsons: John Alexander Welborn and his wife Kera Daley Welborn, Charles Andrew Welborn, and Thomas Rhodes Welborn; one great-granddaughter, Miley Nicole Welborn; one sister, Wilhelmina Isbell of Rome; one brother in-law, D.C. Rhodes of Rome.
Her homecoming celebration will be an event on Sunday, August 1, 1:30 p.m. at Second Avenue Baptist Church. Rev. Monty Stallins will lead the celebration. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be given in her memory to Second Avenue Baptist Church, 823 E. 2″d• Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.
