Robert Harrison Woodyard

Robert Harrison Woodyard 95, of Decatur passed away on January 6, 2017. His wife of 56 years, Juanita, preceded him in death in 2002. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law David and Shelley Woodyard of Tallahassee, FL; Phillip and Kathy Woodyard of Fairfax Station, VA; daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Tim Winn of Snellville, GA; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and three sisters. He was predeceased by a son, Paul Eric Woodyard. He was an active member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. Bob was born Sept 5, 1921 in Macon, GA and graduated from Tech High School in Atlanta in 1939. He graduated in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech in the class of 1950. He served in the Navy during World War II as a radar technician and was commissioned as an electronics officer in the Naval Reserve. During the war he served aboard ship and took part in nine invasions which included Sicily plus eight island landings in the Pacific. After graduating from Georgia Tech, Mr. Woodyard worked for several companies where he designed shipboard radar systems and participated in the design, development, and testing of electronic components used in the space program that led to the launching of the vehicle on the Apollo program that landed on the moon in 1969. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Smoke Rise Baptist Church on Saturday January 14th, 11:00 am, Dr. Chris George officiating. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service at 10:00 am.
