Obituary for Ralph Martin Jones March 11, 1945-October 9, 2013

Ralph Martin Jones, Jr., Principal Bass of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, age 68, died peacefully Wednesday, October 9, 2013 after a three and a half year battle with cancer. Ralph was a very devoted father, son, and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Martin Jones and Eleanor May Marion. He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 year, Gloria Gibson Jones, his two sisters, Donna Marie Beard and Sharon Elaine Karloski, nephew Steve Karloski, and two children, Christopher Douglas Jones and Shelley Marissa Jones. Originally from Decatur, IL, he attended MacArthur High School class of 1963, pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Bass at University of Tulsa. Before joining the Atlanta Symphony in 1970, Ralph briefly played in the Pittsburgh Symphony. In 1977, Ralph became Principal Bass of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra where he became an outstanding musical leader in the teaching and outreach field. He loved animals, woodworking, network marketing businesses, and vacations with his family in Hilton Head, SC. The family would like to thank Winship Cancer Institute, Weinstein Hospice, and Hospice Atlanta for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to ASO Talent Development Program, 1280 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30309, or to Peachtree Christian Church Heritage Fund at 1580 Peachtree St. NW, Atlanta, GA 30309. A memorial service will be held at Peachtree Christian Church on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 7 p.m.
