Michael David Newman

Woodstock, GA – Michael David Newman, 62, passed January 17, 2022.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughters, Melanie Newman and Stephanie Burris (Tre Jon) and granddaughters, Selah Kennedy Burris and Huxley Anne Burris. He leaves behind his sister Julie Slaten (Gary), nieces, Kelly and Amy and nephew, Brian.

Born June 14, 1959 in Ayer, Massachusetts, Michael grew up a true Military and Auburn man. He was the eldest son to the late Lieutenant Colonel Frank Charles Newman and his wife, Eva Honolka Newman, where he was quickly introduced to the mobile life of the Army, living across the country before the family settled at Fort Rucker in Ozark, Alabama.

As a child, Mike and his siblings were introduced to Auburn football at the 1971 Gator Bowl, where the 10th-ranked Tigers defeated Ole Miss and a family obsession began. He had a razor whit, capable of recalling team and individual statistics from any game or season. Mike fueled this passion into playing sports and time in radio booths through college, often saying he would have been a sportscaster had the occupation truly flourished at the time.

Upon the death of his brother, Steven Allen “Chip” Newman, Michael chose to join the Army, following his father’s footsteps and a family passion for aviation. Mike was an SPC E-4, serving alongside good friends as the helicopter repair crew both stateside and overseas. It was during his enlistment that he met Susan in the USSR, and a 40-year relationship began.

Michael studied engineering at both Auburn University and Georgia Tech before establishing his family’s new life in Woodstock, Georgia, where he resided until his passing. While he held many titles throughout his professional career, his favorite occupation was being a dad to Melanie and Stephanie. He served as an F35 mechanic at Lockheed Martin Marietta.

He is predeceased by siblings, Michael Frank Newman, Steven Allen Newman, John Zeke Walker and Sydney Honolka Walker II.

A service will be held February 3, 2022 at 9:00 AM at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia followed by a celebration of life from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Wellesley Clubhouse, 1001 Wellesley Crest Drive, Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations in Mike’s memory made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
