Marshall DuBose Shackelford

Marshall DuBose Shackelford, age 97, of Dunwoody, passed away at home peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2013. He was a true Southern Gentleman who will be remembered for his generous humor and abiding love for his family, and he will be sorely missed. Bo enjoyed people, particularly visiting with family, working with wood, attending PALS, and helping at the St. Martin in the Fields Budget Helper Shop. Born June 23, 1916, in Waxahachie, Texas, he was the son of Love DuBose Shackelford and Lewis Lemuel Shackelford. He graduated from Waxahachie High School, and attended Rice Institute now Rice University, the University of Texas, and Southern Methodist University, where he received a B.A. in Psychology; he went on to complete his course work for his Masters degree in Psychology, just short of his thesis, at S.M.U. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941 and attended an officers’ training program at Columbia University. He served in the Small Boat LCM-LCVD Division and later as a navigator of a 10, 000 ton transport ship in the Asiatic-Pacific and European Theaters during World War II. Bo participated in the small boat landings in the Battle of Southern France and the Battle of Okinawa. He was released from active duty in June 1946 and subsequently served for a time in the U.S. Naval Reserve; at discharge, his rank was Lieutenantjg. After many years, he retired from a sales management position at American Seating Corporation and Mississippi School Supply. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Miriam Martha Harris, his twin brother, Lewis Lemuel Shackelford, Jr., his brother, Edwin Anthony Shackelford, and his niece, Miriam Harris. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Regina Markey Shackelford; his son, Steven DuBose Shackelford, of Dunwoody; his daughter, Jean Ann Shackelford, of Snellville; his daughter, Susanne Shackelford Winquist and her husband Richard, of Charlotte, North Carolina; his granddaughters, Katherine Herdt and Elizabeth Winquist; his great-grandson, Liam Herdt; and his nephews, Lewis Shackelford, III, Bart Harris, and Edward Harris. A private family service will be held at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia, where he was a member for many years.
