Margaret Marie Mathews Mitchell was born September 8, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the first of three children born to Beatrice and Joseph H. Mathews. Margaret Mitchell died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, of complications from pneumonia.

As a young girl at Commercial High School Class of 1944, she served as Student Body Girl President, and as a member of the International Order of Rainbow Girls. A native Atlantan, she spent her life serving others as an active community and church volunteer, and as leader of many organizations. She was a devoted member of the Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church Radiant Class and the Woman’s Missionary Union, the Sharondale Garden Club in Garden Hills, and the Commercial High School Alumni Association. Her many interests and activities included travel, reading, gardening, needlework, and cooking. She instilled her lifelong love of learning in all of her children and her grandchildren. She was a high energy Southern lady, a born leader and organizer with a wonderful sense of humor. She had hundreds of friends who will miss her loving kindness, fun spirit, and quick wit.

She is survived by her children Cathy Fiebelkorn Thomas M., Karen Pinson, Camille Wingate Frank W., Cameron Mitchell Gabriella; grandchildren Kristin, Kevin Deannah and David Amy Fiebelkorn, Katherine and Michael Galardi, Caroline and Meredith Wingate, Nicole and Stephanie Mitchell; and great grandchildren Jason and Lillian Fiebelkorn. She is also survived by her sister, Anita Mathews Mize and brother, Joe C. Mathews Brenda, and their children.

A memorial service will be held at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm. A celebration of her life to include friends and family will be held in the Fellowship Hall after the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, 2715 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30305, in memory of Margaret M. Mitchell.
