Joseph Vincent Gallo,“Jim”, passed away on November 18, 2011 in Atlanta, GA after a short illness. He was 89 years old. Jim was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on October 24, 1922. He was a son of Calogero Gallo and Savina Parisi Gallo. He proudly served his country during World War II as part of the First Infantry Division, and earned six Battle Stars. During the Invasion of Sicily in July, 1943, he met both his grandmothers who lived in Gela. He also participated in D-Day, landing on Omaha Beach. When he returned home, he went to work for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 25 years. He married the former Kathleen Smith Torsone in September 1959. She predeceased him in 2001. He was also predeceased by his brothers Frank and John, and by his sister Isabelle. His sister Rose Stearns of Greater Cleveland, Ohio, survives him. He is also survived by three daughters. Georgette Claude Morton and Jacqueline Gary Keefe of Atlanta, and Janine Walter Whalen of Philadelphia. Four grandchildren, Sean Keefe, Blair Morton, Hayley Morton, and Carly Whalen. Many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his beloved friend, companion of 27 years, and dance partner, Betty Stevens. Services will be private. There will be a celebration of his life at the home of Georgette Morton on Saturday, November 26, at 2:00 pm. Donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Altus Hospice Foundation, 1 Dunwoody Park, Suite 120, Atlanta, GA 30338, or to the Society of the First Infantry Division, 1933 Morris Rd, Blue Bell, PA 19422-1422 for their Scholarship fund or the BRO fund. On a personal note, our Dad touched many lives and had many friends. He was a great example of how to live and treat others. His jokes and stories will live on. We will miss him dearly.
