Joseph Frederick Glass

JOSEPH F. GLASS, known as “Joe” to all, passed away today at 98 after living a full and wonderful life. His devoted wife of 64 years, Grace, preceded him in 2003. Joe was born to Alonzo and Ivy Lee Glass in Memphis, TN. on March 25, 1914. He leaves behind a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Ray of Loganville, a son and daughter-in law, Joe Jr and Tammy Glass of Little Rock, AR, seven grandchildren, Charlie and wife Courtney of Snellville, Coley and husband Bill Batchelor of Grayson, Carson and wife Katie Ray of Grayson, Joseph F. Glass III, Wayne, Carter and Parker Glass, all of Little Rock, AR. and eight great grandchildren. Even though his family was his pride and greatest accomplishment, there were many others.
Prior to beginning a career with the Veterans Administration, Joe was one of the first trainers of Seeing Eye dogs. He was a Master Sergeant in the Army for seven years during WWII. He went into the VA and served in many capacities in hospital administration before retiring after 35 years. Joe graduated from the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta and was the first Dean of Allied Sciences at Vanderbilt University. After retiring Joe became very involved in the Antique Clock Association, both as a collector and speaker. He became certified as a water aerobics instructor in his 80’s and taught until he was 94. One of Joe’s proudest accomplishments was his being selected to carry the Olympic Torch when he was 90.
All of this being said, his relationship with God and his leadership in the church were what he did best and what brought him the greatest pleasure. He was a Children’s Department Director, Deacon, and Sunday School Director and taught into his 90’s. Joe was a friend and counselor to many; he will be missed!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Smoke Rise Baptist Church Children’s Ministries. A memorial service will be held at Smoke Rise Baptist Church, 5901 Hugh Howell Rd, Stone Mountain, Ga. on Sunday, July 15th at 2PM.
