Corporal Johnnie “Jessie” Henry James, 95, of Stockbridge, GA entered the gates of eternal life March 19, 2020 peacefully at his residence with family by his side.

A veteran of World War II, Cpl. James was born February 3, 1925 in Tuscaloosa, AL to Henry and Lillie Pearl. In 1941, he joined the armed forces and was assigned to the Marine Corps base camp in Lejeune, NC. After graduating from special training, he was assigned to the 3rd Brigade and deployed to the Pacific Area in 1942 where he served as Private First Class with Company C 1st Medical Battalion at Cape Gloucester, New Britain. Cpl. James was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in 1945 where he was later discharged with full honors in 1946.

Cpl. James was a brave and loyal soldier, as well as a patient and loving father. He married Glennell Stewart in Atlanta, GA in 1947. He later joined Delta Airlines as a mechanic retiring in 1981. Jessie and Glennell enjoyed travelling the US soaking in the sights, spending their time in the church and loved being with their family. He was always tinkering around with handy man projects taking much pride in his skill. Later in life he would share his experiences with his loved ones with great pride and passion.

Widowed in 2011, he spent his remaining time with family and friends enjoying life to the fullest. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and daughter, Jeanine Leake of McDonough, GA. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Peek (Larry) of Marietta, grandchildren Matt Peek of Atlanta, Jennifer Thompson (Randy) of Stockbridge, Myria Peek of Marietta and Jonathan Leake of Macon. Additionally, by five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at a later announced date at Stockbridge First United Methodist Church located at 4863 North Henry Blvd in Stockbridge, GA. The service will be officiated by Lead Pastor Andy Postell.
