Daniel Dwight Dan Roper died on September 3, 2016. He was born in Decatur, Alabama, on May 30, 1935 to Sadie Daniel Roper and Dwight M. Roper. He lived in Birmingham with his parents and sisters, Judith Roper Pardue and Mary Roper Griser, and brother, Ennis Roper. He is predeceased by his parents and brother. He graduated from Phillips High School and Birmingham Southern University. After college, he served two years in the Navy on the Battleship Lake Champlain. After returning to Birmingham, he reported for the Birmingham News. Later he joined Bell South continuing with AT&T in public relations. He retired in 1987. Dan and Carolyn Thomas were married in 1962. They had two children, Chris married to Wendy and Jennifer married to Scott Artz, five grandchildren: Amanda and Shaun Artz, Cash, Taylor and Nicholas Roper. Dan is also survived by nieces Kim Roper and Paige Roper, Steve, Matthew, and Brooke Pardue.

Services to celebrate the life of Dan will be on Thursday, September 8, 4:00 PM in the Sanctuary of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church; the service will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. Alice Rogers and the Rev. Susan Pinson. Visitation with the family is in the parlor of the Glenn Memorial Church School Building at 3:00 PM. Donations may be made to the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church in Dan’s memory.
