Vernon J. Barrett

February 17, 1921 — April 9, 2010

Vernon Jeffrey Barrett of Dunwoody, GA, 89 years of age, died surrounded by his family April 9, 2010, after a short illness.

He grew up in Logan County, West Virginia and served as a U.S. Army medic in World War II. His tours included north Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1949 with a degree in History. His professional career with National Theater Supply Co. took them to New York, Minneapolis, and Boston. He was an indefatigable supporter of Democratic candidates and causes. After retiring, he and his wife, Verna, joined Volunteers in Service to America VISTA which brought him to Atlanta.

He treasured spending time with his family and enjoyed traveling, reading, acrostics, music, tennis and walking. His greatest joy was sharing these experiences with his loving wife of 56 years, Verna Payne Barrett. Other survivors include his two daughters and their spouses: Susan and John Burns of Chickamauga, GA, and Ann and Chris Newland of Hamilton, GA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Sean Clark, Lisa Norman, Jesse Newland and wife Katie, Hannah Newland, Eliza Newland, and two great grandchildren, Lillian, 5 years of age, and James, 3 months of age.

A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the West Virginia University Foundation or the charity of your choice.
