Susan Elaine Anderson (Callaway), age 79, of Atlanta, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, in the company of her husband, Brent Anderson, and her sister, Star Good.

Susan was born June 28, 1946, in Jerusalem, Palestine, to Merrel Price Callaway and Elizabeth Fountain Callaway. She graduated from high school at Hampden DuBose Academy in Florida. Susan later attended Carson-Newman College in Tennessee. In her senior year, she was elected President of the English Honor Fraternity, Sigma Tau Delta. She graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in May of 1968.

Susan began her career with the Federal Government in 1968 at the Naval Supply Center in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1970, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and went to work for the Internal Revenue Service. She retired in October of 2008 after 40 years of government service. During that time, she received numerous awards and commendations, including the Regional Commissioner’s Award, which is the highest award possible at the Regional level. At retirement, she received the Albert Gallatin Award, the US Department of Treasury highest career service award. She was also commended by the IRS Commissioner in Washington, DC, for her extraordinary professionalism, abundant accomplishments, her positive attitude, sense of humor, and character. Susan was also on the Board of the Society of Federal Labor & Employee Relations Professionals and received a Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions and dedicated service.

While working at the Naval Supply Center in Charleston, Susan met her future spouse, Lieutenant Brent Anderson. They were married in Atlanta June 26, 1971, and enjoyed 54+ years of happy marriage. Together, they enjoyed traveling, new restaurants, music, family gatherings, and entertaining friends. Susan particularly enjoyed shopping at garage sales and various stores to accumulate potential gifts for family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Brent Anderson; her 4 sisters, Star Good, Joy Godbold, Martha Whitson, and Margie Pearson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Arlene Jensen Callaway, and by her sister, Sharon Knechtel.

As a girl, the hymn by Herbert Johnson she loved to sing with her sisters begins, “Face to face with Christ my Savior.”

A memorial service celebrating Susan's life will be held on Saturday, June 29. The time and location will be announced at a later date.

Susan will always be remembered for her good nature, her energy, her sense of humor, her deep love for her family, and her beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed by her husband and her entire family.
