Shirley Brewer Griswell

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Griswell, a devoted wife, mother, Maw-Maw, great-grandmother, and friend whose life was marked by faith, service, and love for her family.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Griswell; her parents, Carl and Bessie Brewer; her sister, Janie King; and her brother, Charles Brewer.

Shirley is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and Jim Krieger of Marietta, Georgia, and Lisa and Rick Whelan of Wedowee, Alabama. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Austin Whelan (Amanda), Kimberly Shurley (Ryan), and Madison Fillingim (Andrew). Her legacy continues through her beloved great-grandchildren, Shiloh Fillingim, Ezra Fillingim, River Fillingim, Kendry Fillingim, Finnick Fillingim, Anderson Whelan, and Eli Shurley.

Shirley was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and from an early age displayed a remarkable energy and enthusiasm for life. As a high school student, she was dedicated to her studies and excelled academically while also participating in athletics and music. Shirley had a lifelong love of reading and often preferred spending time with a good book over almost any other activity. Her consistency in showing up for others, whether family, friends, or members of her community, made her a wonderful example to all who knew her.

Throughout her life, Shirley embraced a variety of careers and opportunities. Her work experience included home care for children, kindergarten teacher, movie theater attendant, long-distance telephone operator, and payroll assistant for Southern Bell. No matter the role, she brought dedication, kindness, and a strong work ethic to everything she did.

Shirley had a heart for serving others, rooted in her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Her relationship with the Lord guided her life and shaped the way she cared for those around her. She devoted countless hours to volunteer work within her church, schools, and community. She managed the church library at Mableton First Baptist Church, volunteered at Roberts Elementary School, served in the student ministry at Hope Church, and generously gave her time to Wellstar Cobb Hospital. Her willingness to help others and her servant's heart left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. Shirley's consistent love, faith, and encouragement were reflected in the words she so often shared with family and friends: "Stay positive, God is in control."

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the compassionate and loving staff of Paulding Care Center and Georgia Hospice for the outstanding care provided to Shirley over the last two years. Your kindness, patience, and dedication meant so much to our family. We are deeply grateful for the love and dignity with which you cared for our mother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Samaritan's Purse in honor of Shirley's life and legacy.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, November 7, at First Baptist Church Mableton, 5385 Church Street, Mableton, GA 30126. Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories of Shirley's life. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m.
