Sara Rice Sherberger

May 20, 1936 — May 11, 2012

Sara was born in Milledgeville Georgia. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Georgia State College for Women, and began her career as a high school science teacher.

For one year Sara taught at Stuttgart American High School, Germany, and traveled extensively throughout Europe. When she returned to the United States, Sara earned a Master of Science degree in zoology at the University of Georgia. After a brief time in industry, Sara returned to her first love, teaching.

Sara loved books and encouraged all students to read. To this end she established the Helen Pearson Reading Award, which continues to benefit students in the Jones County GA School System.

For more than 30 summers Sara and her husband hiked through national parks from Maine to Alaska. Falls were times for canoe journeys through the Okefenokee Swamp.

Sara’s caring personality and great smile endeared her to all and will be sorely missed. She is survived by her husband, Fred, and by one brother and two sisters. Sara resided in Atlanta, GA.

A memorial service will be held in the future.

In lieu of flowers, donations to an Alzheimer’s program would be appreciated.
