Patrick Edward Dougherty

Patrick Edward Dougherty, 66, died Friday, January 22 at home, surrounded by love, after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born March 17, 1949 in Coronado, CA to Jane Dibble Dougherty and Joseph E Dougherty. As a navy family, they moved often and his early years were spent in Norfolk, VA, Annapolis, MD, Swarthmore, PA and finally MIddletown/Newport, RI. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1967.

In 1973 he moved to Atlanta, GA where he met and married the love of his life. He worked in shipping and receiving with the H. B. Fuller Company for 32 years and completed an associates degree in automotive technology from Dekalb Technical Institute in 2003. Ever a good neighbor, co-worker and friend, as well as a beloved father and grandfather, Patrick was a kind and caring man who touched many lives. Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan McKnight Dougherty, daughters, Abigail Dougherty Whatley Andrew and Elizabeth Dougherty Griffith Kyle, son, Ned Patrick Dougherty Megan, and four grandchildren, Clare and Charlie Whatley, Collin Griffith, and Jonah Patrick Dougherty. Also, siblings Kate Dougherty of Elk, Ca, Michael Dougherty Gloria of Conyers, GA, Dennis Dougherty of Newport, RI, Maggie Hinman Jeffrey of Gaithersburg, MD, Matthew Dougherty of Newport RI, and Daniel Dougherty Lauren of Natick, MA, along with a host of beloved nieces and nephews, and his devoted caregiver Katie Owenby Leah of Decatur, GA.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 15 at 10 am in the Julia Thompson Smith Chapel on the campus of Agnes Scott College. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to support Lewy body dementia research under the direction of Dr. William Hu at the Emory Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The family is especially grateful for the care and comfort provided by the wonderful staff of Crossroads Hospice.
