The greatest tribute we can offer those we have lost is not simply our grief, but our gratitude. Today, as we gather in Michael's memory, our hearts are full—not just with sorrow, but with profound thankfulness for the time we were blessed to share with our cherished brother, Michael Sullivan.
With heavy hearts, we share the painful news of the passing of our beloved Michael—our brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and dear friend. Michael's presence gave warmth and meaning to our lives, and his absence has left a space that can never truly be filled.
Michael James Sullivan was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 2, 1975. From the very beginning, Michael radiated an energy and curiosity that drew people to him. Growing up in South Minneapolis and later in Apple Valley, he was always exploring, always asking questions, always looking for the next adventure. We fondly remember his youthful enthusiasm for computers and electronics—a passion that earned him the affectionate title of “family nerd.” His first job at a computer company was a source of endless fascination and delight, as he dove headlong into every new piece of technology he could get his hands on.
Though Michael’s love for computers was strong, he chose a different path when he decided to serve his country and joined the United States Army in the early fall of 2001. He became a member of the 315th Infantry, among the last to enlist before the events of 9/11 forever changed the world. Michael approached his training with dedication and was soon mastering complex communication platforms—skills that would become invaluable both in the Army and later in his civilian career. He served bravely in Kuwait and took part in the initial attack on Iraq in the fall of 2011, receiving medals that were never mentioned. After leaving the Army in 2015, Michael continued his commitment to service by joining the Internal Revenue Service as a secure data transmissions and communications specialist, using his talents to help others in a new capacity.
Despite all his successes, Michael was never able to fully escape the shadows that followed him home from Iraq. The challenges he faced were real and deep, and while they did not define him, they were a part of his story. We remember Michael not only for his triumphs but also for his courage in facing the burdens he carried.
Michael’s devotion to the people—and animals—he loved was unwavering. He was fiercely loyal to his friends, deeply committed to his work, and above all, absolutely devoted to his beloved dog, Charlie. The joy he found in Charlie’s companionship was just one of the many ways Michael’s big heart shone through.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, John and Barb. He leaves behind his sisters, Shelly and Marie; his brothers, John and Bill; his sisters-in-law, Brenda and Kim; his cherished nieces, Kalynne, Shea, and Laura; and so many friends who considered him family. Michael’s circle of loved ones was wide, and his impact on each of us profound.
We will miss you deeply, Michael. But above all, we will carry with us the memory of your incredible love, your bright smile, and your endless kindness. Our lives were forever changed by having you with us, and our gratitude will never fade.
Rest peacefully, dearest Michael. You will always be in our hearts.
