Margaret Tinkler Stone

March 14, 1925 — May 27, 2012

Margaret Tinkler Stone was born March 14, 1925 in Centralia, Illinois. Her friends and family knew her as “Marty” and “Gran”. Her family moved to Atlanta where she graduated from North Fulton High School later attending DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana along with her beloved brother Del. Later, Marty worked as a secretary at Retail Credit in Atlanta. Shortly after WWII ended, she met the love of her life, Jack Stone, on a blind date. They were happily married for 57 years until his death in 2004. To their children and grandchildren, they were a wonderful example of what true love is all about in a marriage. They were “love and devotion personified” and truly had fun together.

Marty served as President of the Lovett Mother’s Club in 1964. She was a member of the Wood Valley Garden Club and she started The Paces Garden Club. She also volunteered at Egleston’s Children’s Hospital for years. She was a member of The Radiant Sunday Class at 2nd Ponce de Leon Baptist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She and Jack loved listening to music of the ’40’s and ’50’s – especially “Post War” music. In their retirement years, they loved to travel and took numerous trips throughout the world on freighter ships. They also flew “Space Available” on Air Force planes to Europe and enjoyed “Eastern Airlines Weekender” trips around the country. A few years after Jack died, Marty took her sons and wives and their children to France, so that they could all experience and appreciate Jack’s WWII service in Normandy.

Marty had a fun loving, happy, easy – going personality and everyone loved her. Most of all, she was a wonderful, devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, especially adored by her grandchildren. Marty is survived by her sons Michael and his wife Linda, Craig and his wife Suzanne, her grandchildren Jamie and her husband Geoff Rogers, Todd, Carter and Buster Stone and her step grandchildren Elizabeth and Scott Finsthwait.

A memorial service will be in the Chapel at 2nd Ponce de Leon Baptist on Friday, June 1 at 11:30, with a reception following at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to 2nd Ponce de Leon Baptist Church 2715 Peachtree Rd. Atlanta 30305 or Eagle Ranch Inc. P.O Box 7200 Chestnut Mt., Ga. 30502.
